Adapting Technology for the COVID Era

A recent article in Harvard Business Review on How to Harness the Digital Transformation of the Covid Era highlighted how “The pandemic has pushed societies to an inflection point where embracing technology is no longer an option but a necessity,” and that “The rapid spread of technology accelerated by the pandemic has led to a pressing need for businesses and governments to adapt.”

While there is no doubt of the need to embrace and adapt to technology and its use in business and society, there is also a need for businesses to adapt how they are currently using technology to the changes brought about by the pandemic – in the conduct of business and how people work.

In adapting and changing how we use technology, we will need to reallocate IT resources to those areas with a growing need or greater importance to the business from those with a lesser need or lower priority. While that is clear, what may not be too clear is to identify where the needs are, and the type and quantity of the IT resources to reallocate.

To do so, you need to understand how your key business applications are performing and what the end-user experience of such applications are like. This involves being able to accurately monitor and analyze different aspects of the applications in an increasingly complex application environment. For example,  parts of an application and its data could be in the cloud while other parts could be hosted in various data centers. The application itself could be accessed from the corporate network or through the Internet from anywhere in the world!

It is only when you have a clear understanding of how your applications are performing, of where the bottlenecks and resource constraints are, that you will know not just where but the type and quantity of IT resources to reallocate.
